On Monday, February 28 2000, a dozen parishioners met in Fr. Felton Hall to discuss the possibility of re-opening a school at Old St. Mary's. In addressing the group, Fr. Al explained how, based on personal observations and what he has experienced during his evangelization missions in the neighborhood, he has come to the conclusion that the biggest challenge facing Over The Rhine is the number of men who have no purpose or direction in their lives.
Father went on to relate how during a recent retreat he felt a strong call to address this problem by opening a boys' school at Old St. Mary's. This inspiration occurred on September 9, the feast day of St. Peter Claver. Hence, the new school will be placed under this saint's patronage. The St. Peter Claver Latin School (SPCLS) will be an all-boy institution featuring an advanced program of academic studies. The goal of the SPCLS will be to immerse the young men of Old St. Mary's parish and the surrounding Over The Rhine community in a thoroughly Catholic culture. By teaching these young men that their lives have a purpose based in Jesus Christ and by equipping them with a solid academic foundation, they will go on to become leaders in their families, church, and community. Please pray for this endeavor. May God's will be done in transforming individual lives and promoting the culture of life in the neighborhood.
Fr. Al Lauer founded St. Peter Claver Latin School in 2001, whose mission is to promote the formation of young men, primarily from the inner city, to equip them to become great Catholic Christian leaders.
